Have You Seen the Stone Harbor Museum Lately?

Visitors to the Stone Harbor Museum have been treated to a bevy of new displays since last June, when the nonprofit institution completed its years-long quest for a larger space by moving to 9410 Second Ave. Boasting more than 50,000 artifacts, videos and displays, the museum went from a facility with 900 square feet to one with 2,400 square feet.

“With our new location we have much more display space,” says Director Bruce Tell. “Some of the new things on display are a copy of the original deed for Seven Mile Island dated 1723 and purchased by Aaron Leaming Sr., and a 10-foot map of Seven Mile Island dated 1890. It is the only color version of this map, and if you look closely you can see three buildings on the whole island. With the larger space, we are also able to display one of the Comet Sailboats from our Maritime Museum. Displays will be updated, and new items added as the year goes on.”

The Stone Harbor Museum was honored with a 2017 Top-Rated Award from GreatNonprofits.org for its average 5-star review from website users. The organization also continues to grow its Vintage House Program, now with nearly 160 homes certified and displaying vintage house plaques. Patrons can look forward to the series of summer lectures from July through August every Wednesday at 7pm. For the entire month of June, local photographer Michael Zuccato will display his works at the museum.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday from June 11 until Sept. 14. The summer hours are 10am-3pm as well as evening hours on Tuesdays from 7-8:30. The winter and spring hours are limited.
