SURFSIDE PARK PLANNED FOR 2019 OPENING

The Borough of Avalon received two grants from the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders totaling nearly $2.07 million for the Surfside Park project and the expansion of the bike path. The plans for Surfside Park include a complete upgrade to the playground and area between 29th and 30th streets and the beach.

“We are very fortunate to receive a nearly $2 million grant that will finance the construction portion of this heritage project,” said Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “Surfside Park will be a beautiful and functional gathering and recreational area for decades to come. The Park will allow us to further expand our recreational and cultural opportunities in the Borough on the most valuable part of real estate in the Borough.”

Homeowners first learned of the project last April in a presentation by Scott Taylor of the Taylor Design Group at the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association’s Community Connections meeting. The Borough applied to receive funding from the Cape May County Open Space program through a competitive process and was awarded the grant during the Freeholders meeting in November. The Taylor Design Group will oversee the concept and design while working with Mott MacDonald, the Borough’s engineering firm. The project will go out to bid in August with hopes of awarding a contract in September.

The site currently hosts a playground that is more than 20 years old, with swing set, restrooms and a skate park that is no longer operable. The area will receive a complete renovation: The playground will be upgraded, the restrooms will be updated to include changing and rinsing stations, and there will be a picnic pavilion with tables and chairs. There will also be a stage for community events, updated bike racks, and photo ops including an Avalon lifeboat and lifeguard stand. The concept will incorporate the look and feel of other community areas within the Borough such as Veterans Plaza and the 39th Street Park.

The anticipated completion of Surfside Park is Memorial Day 2019. For more information or to view the plans for Surfside Park, go to the Borough’s website, www.avalonboro.net.
